How to Build the Mahjong Wall
Building the wall is an important part of preparing for a Mahjong game. After all 152 tiles have been turned facedown and thoroughly shuffled, each player builds one side of the wall. Learning how to count, stack, and position the tiles correctly helps every game begin smoothly and fairly.
What Is the Mahjong Wall?
The Mahjong wall is the square formation created from the facedown tiles before dealing begins. During the game, players draw tiles from the wall as they work toward completing a winning hand.
The wall keeps the tiles organized, hidden, and ready for play. Building it is also part of the tradition and rhythm of Mahjong. Once players become comfortable with the process, the wall can be assembled quickly.
How Many Tiles Are in the Mahjong Wall?
A standard National Mah Jongg League-style set uses 152 tiles. The tiles are divided evenly among four players, giving each player 38 tiles for one side of the wall.
Each individual wall should be:
19 tiles long
Two tiles high
38 tiles total
When all four sections are pushed together, they create a square containing all 152 Mahjong tiles.
How to Build the Mahjong Wall Step by Step
1. Turn the Tiles Facedown
Place all 152 tiles in the center of the table with their symbols facing down. Check that no tile faces are visible before shuffling.
2. Shuffle the Tiles
All four players use their hands to move the facedown tiles around the table. This process is often called washing the tiles.
Mix the tiles thoroughly while keeping them facedown. Shuffle gently to protect the tiles and keep them from falling off the table.
3. Gather 38 Tiles
Each player gathers 38 facedown tiles from the center of the table. You do not need to count them one at a time.
An easy method is to create 19 stacks containing two tiles each. Nineteen stacks multiplied by two tiles equals 38 tiles.
4. Create the Bottom Row
Arrange 19 tiles in a straight horizontal row in front of your rack. Keep each tile facedown and position the tiles close together.
5. Add the Top Row
Place another row of 19 facedown tiles directly on top of the first row. Your completed wall should now be two tiles high, 19 tiles long, and contain 38 tiles.
6. Form a Square
Push each completed wall toward the center of the table. Connect the ends of the four walls to form a square.
Check that each side is stable and that all loose tiles have been included. If tiles remain in the center—or one wall is shorter than the others—recount the stacks before dealing.
Tips for Building the Wall
New players may need time to become comfortable building the Mahjong wall. These tips can make the process easier:
Build 19 stacks of two instead of counting 38 individual tiles.
Keep every tile facedown while shuffling and building.
Line up the bottom row before adding the top row.
Place tiles close together so the wall remains stable.
Count the stacks again if any tiles remain in the center.
Ask another player to verify the wall when learning.
Handle the tiles gently to prevent chips or scratches.
Some players build the wall in smaller sections and then slide the sections together. Choose the method that feels most comfortable while maintaining the correct number of tiles.
What Happens After the Wall Is Built?
Once all four walls are complete, the dealer rolls the dice to determine where the wall will be broken. The tiles are then dealt until each player has the correct starting number.
The dealer begins with 14 tiles, while the other three players begin with 13. Players should count their tiles before beginning the Charleston to make sure the deal is correct.
