How to Read the Mahjong Card

The National Mah Jongg League card organizes winning hands into categories such as 2468, Any Like Numbers, Quints, Consecutive Run, 13579, Winds and Dragons, 369, and Singles and Pairs.

Colors on the card represent different suits—not specific tile colors. One color means one suit, a second color means another suit, and a third color indicates the remaining suit.

Pay attention to:

  • The hand’s category

  • Required numbers and suits

  • The number of flowers

  • Winds and dragons

  • The hand’s point value

  • Whether the hand is exposed or concealed

  • Notes beneath the hand

Read every hand from left to right and make sure your final tiles match it exactly.
