How to Shuffle Mahjong Tiles

At the end of a game, turn all tiles face down in the center of the table. Players use both hands to move the tiles around until they are thoroughly mixed. This process is called “washing the tiles.”

Keep every tile face down while shuffling so players cannot see its identity. Move tiles gently to protect the set and avoid knocking tiles off the table.

Once the tiles are mixed, each player gathers tiles to build a wall that is two tiles high and 19 tiles long when playing with 152 tiles. Push the four walls together to form a square.
