Mahjong Cheat Sheet

Use this quick Mahjong reference during lessons and guided play:

• Start with 13 tiles.

• Dealer begins with 14 tiles and discards first.

• Follow: draw, rack, exchange, discard.

• Keep only 13 tiles after every discard.

• A pung contains three identical tiles.

• A kong contains four identical tiles.

• A quint contains five identical tiles.

• A sextet contains six identical tiles.

• Jokers may be used in groups of three or more identical tiles.

• Jokers cannot be used in pairs.

• Discards can be called for exposures or Mahjong.

• Concealed hands cannot make exposures.

• Complete the hand exactly as printed on the card.
