Mahjong for Beginners
Mahjong can feel overwhelming at first, but you do not need to memorize everything before playing. Begin by learning the suits, tile names, card structure, and basic turn sequence.
Focus on these beginner skills:
Identify every tile.
Learn how to read the card.
Keep your tiles organized.
Choose two or three possible hands.
Use the Charleston to improve your options.
Follow the draw, rack, exchange, and discard sequence.
Check that you always have 13 tiles during play.
New players often improve faster when they practice with patient players or attend guided play. Give yourself permission to use a cheat sheet, ask questions, and take time when evaluating the card.
