Whether you are entering your first tournament or already enjoy competitive Mahjong, our goal is to create an experience that is organized, enjoyable, and fair for everyone at the table.

What to Expect at a Mahjong Tournament

Tournament formats may vary depending on the event, but players can generally expect:

  • Assigned tables and player rotations

  • Timed rounds of American Mahjong

  • Tournament-specific rules and scoring

  • Individual scorecards or electronic score tracking

  • Opportunities to play with different participants

  • Prizes or recognition for top finishers

  • A welcoming community atmosphere

Who Can Participate?

Mahjong tournaments are best suited for players who already understand the basic rules of American Mahjong. Participants should be comfortable reading the current National Mah Jongg League card, completing the Charleston, choosing a hand, making exposures, exchanging Jokers, and declaring Mahjong.

You do not need to be an expert to participate. However, you should be able to play independently and maintain a reasonable pace. Players who need more practice before entering a tournament may benefit from Mahjong 102, Guided Play, Open Play, or competitive league play.

Preparing for Your First Mahjong Tournament

Before tournament day, review the event’s rules and scoring system. Different tournaments may use different procedures, penalties, time limits, or scoring bonuses.

Players should also practice:

  • Selecting a hand efficiently

  • Completing the Charleston within the allowed time

  • Keeping 13 tiles on the rack during play

  • Following the order of draw, rack, exchange, and discard

  • Verifying Mahjong before other players throw in their tiles

  • Managing exposed and concealed hands correctly

  • Playing at a steady, considerate pace

Host a Private Mahjong Tournament

Mid Mo Mahjong can also help create an organized Mahjong tournament for private groups, community organizations, fundraisers, clubs, retreats, and special events. Tournament services may include event planning, rules development, scoring, player communication, table assignments, rotations, score tracking, and tournament-day coordination.
